Payroll Giving

Give tax efficiently to your favourite charities.

About two-thirds of the UK give to charitable good causes, but not many do this in a tax-efficient way through payroll giving. Payroll Giving also provides charities with a regular, reliable income and makes your money go further.

What is it?

A scheme that lets you donate money tax efficiently, direct from your pay to any registered charity or recognised good cause in the UK.

How it works

  • A regular monthly donation is taken from your pay before tax.
  • As the donation is taken before you’re taxed, a pledge to the charity of £5 a month will only cost you £4 a month (or £3 if you’re a higher rate tax payer) and the Government makes up the difference.
You donate It costs you (for basic rate tax payers) It costs you (for higher rate tax payers)
£5 £4 £3
£7.50 £6 £4.50
£10 £8 £6
£20 £16 £12
  • You can give a regular amount each month to up to three different charities.
  • If you want to support more charities, or if you want to be more flexible and give different amounts at different times you can open a Freedom Account. Your monthly donation goes into your very own charity account and you’ll get a charity cheque book. You give what you want, to a charity you want, when you want – you can manage this account online too.
  • The minimum donation to a specific charity is £1 a month or £10 a month for a Freedom Account.
  • If you have existing donations, they will be transferred to the my Aviva flex system
  • You can select or change the amount of this benefit at any time

Key points to consider

  • Is payroll giving a better option than how you currently donate to charity?
  • Do you want the flexibility of a Freedom Account?

What happens next

  • If you opt for a Freedom Account, in the month after you select the benefit for the first time you’ll receive some further information through the post.

"Sadly, one in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives and research requires a great deal of time and money. Payroll givers make an extremely valuable contribution to our work as they provide us with a regular, reliable stream of support that allows us to continue to invest in groundbreaking research and plan for the future. Payroll giving is an easy and the most tax efficient way of making donations to Cancer Research UK."

"The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign funds research to find treatments and cures; free practical and emotional support; campaigns to raise awareness and grants towards the cost of specialist equipment. Payroll giving forms a sustained regular income which we can rely on helping us to expand our services in a planned way. This includes increasing investment in research, offering more specialist equipment and calling on Government to provide a national neuromuscular service."
